The last year has seen a significant U-turn when it comes to women’s rights. This is quickly becoming a global phenomenon that will have effects felt for decades to come.
Among others, in Afghanistan, the Taliban introduced a new regulation pertaining to criminal procedure, which includes provisions furthering the subjugation of women, the normalisation of violence against women, and the legalisation of slavery, among others. This new regulation comes close to a year after many initiatives supporting women and girls in Afghanistan lost their funding, due to global foreign aid cuts. In Iran, women continue to come to the streets to protest the dire situation in the country and the suppression of human rights. In Iraq, a year after the adoption of the new personal status law, which legalised child marriage, reports suggest that child marriage is booming in the country.
